Which type of DBS check?

A basic check shows unspent convictions and conditional cautions.

A standard check shows spent and unspent convictions and cautions.

An enhanced check shows the same as a standard check plus any information held by local police that’s considered relevant to the role.

An enhanced check with barred lists shows the same as an enhanced check plus whether the applicant is on the list of people barred from doing the role.

We strongly advise that you use this tool on the UK Government’s DBS Check page to check which DBS application is the correct one for you, your employee, or your volunteer before they attend their appointment as the DBS will withdraw any application deemed unsuitable and no refund can be provided.

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Update Service allows applicants to keep their DBS certificates up to date and employers to check a DBS certificate. The service is for standard and enhanced DBS checks only.

Apply as an individual for a basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to get a copy of your criminal record. This is called ‘basic disclosure’. It costs £18. It’s available for people working in England and Wales.
